Lay out a few tiles without adhesive.
Press the tiles into the mortar in the same pattern you determined on the floor.
Set the tiles into the mortar at a slight angle and twist them gently into place for good mortar coverage.

Determine your starting point by starting at the edge of the counter leaving room for the edge tiles and placing tiles back toward the backsplash until you end with the last whole tile close to the backsplash.
